Yorkshire Hip Hop
Hip hop in Yorkshire had been sparse
in contrast to other areas of the UK until the last
few years. With Yorkshire being home to some of the
UK's major cities (Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford) the
potential for any type of music is tremendous.
Over recent years hip hop in the area has flourished
with some of the UK's best and most popular emcees
form the area. Emcees such as Jehst, Skinnyman,
Braintax and Tommy Evans have caused a major
interest in the UK
hip hop scene. However all these emcees did this
by jumping ships to London to make names for themselves.
Yorkshire emcees of the newer breed have chosen to
stay true to their roots and try to make their impact
in their own county. With more and more regular hip
hop nights around the area many of these acts are
getting the exposure needed.
The premier hip hop group in Yorkshire at the minute
are Hoodz Underground. The Sheffield collective have
sold a number of records and played live all around
the UK.
